Cow Herd

For the most part, we raise our own replacements. Over the years, we've made a limited number of outside purchases but that fellow Angus breeder must have the same breeding philosophy that we have.

Fertility and "mothering ability" are still two of the most important economic factors involved in this business. Our replacement females are asked to do what their mothers did and to do it even better.

"Old ET 77"

For a number of years now, we've said "It's time to take old ET 77 off - she's past her prime."

But ...

We'd relent and like clockwork, she'd calve the next year and raise a calf that weaned off in the top of it's contemporary group. "Old ET 77" is as much a part of this century old farm as the antique farm equipment or the circa 1917 farmhouse.

She's a daughter of Pine Drive Big Sky's famous son, 4S Ponderosa, with Marshall Pride 191 on the bottom side. Today, most of the newer Angus breeders wouldn't recognize the names in her pedigree.

We realize that not all of the most important economic traits are shown on the paperwork and this is one example.

"Old ET 77" turned 18 on October 18, 2007, and is shown here with her 16th calf. Well, maybe one more year and one more calf ...
